Spirituality

About 10 years ago, Vancouver writer, Douglas Coupland wrote a book entitled, "Life After God". In it he writes the following: "But then I must remind myself we are living creatures--we have religious impulses--we must --and yet into what cracks do these impulses flow in a world without religion? It is something I think about every day. Sometimes I think it is the only thing I should be thinking about." Indeed, where do we place these impulses that flow within us in a world of ipods, blackberries and designer coffee drinks? We live in a material world surrounded by material products. But we - human beings - are more then material. We are in fact spiritual beings. We have spiritual needs and desires. We feel pangs of spirituality at the end of a long hike and we look out over a beautiful landscape, and wonder about the Artist who created it. Maybe it is at the birth of a child as we hold this squirmy, screaming new human. Or maybe there are times of quiet reflection at the end of the day, when we ask the Big Questions: Who am I? Why am I here? What is the point of it all? The very fact that we ask these questions show that we are built for more then this life. At Heritage Mountain Church, we do not overlook these types of experiences or questions. We recognize that we need some kind of grid to help us process them. Some spiritual practices that we have found that have helped are:

  • Fasting
  • Meditation
  • Prayer
  • Solitude
  • Silence
  • Reading of a Sacred Text (the Bible)

These practices can help us process what is happening to us, give us some objectivity to the experiences and questions we go through on our journey through life.

What is especially helpful is to use the daily office as a guide to prayer.

If you need help in sorting out what it means to be spiritual in today's world, the role of God in your life please contact us. We would love to chat with you about the most important part of your life - your spiritual life.
